Le Domaine

Welcome to the Domaine de l'Oberhof
Welcome to the old cellars of the Abbaye de Pairis

In the heart of the historical and picturesque city of Kaysersberg, Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s birthplace, the Domaine de l’Oberhof welcomes you. The property, earned by the family Salzmann-Thomann, is located at the foot of the castle, at the angle of the fortified bridge.

Don’t forget to visit the fourteenth century chapel and to stop at our 1581 cellar to taste the vintages of the old cellar of the Abbaye de Pairis..

A family tradition.

A selection of grapes, matured on the hillside of the Castle of Kaysersberg is the tradition and speciality of the House. That hillside, as Fischart already wrote it in 1550, is the place where the best wine of the area is collected.

Wine growers from father to son since 1526, each generation has added its own contribution to the structure. The present generation makes the most of their inheritance: a decennial bottling tradition, a knowledge transmitted for several centuries, an experience enriched with the most recent technical progresses, years of practice and several diplomas.

The family structure of the vineyard makes it possible to be permanently present on the ground during the various stages, from production to marketing. The trade name guarantees quality..

Our vineyards.

  • • Our qualitative concern is the growing and treatment of the vine according to the principles of « culture raisonnée »
  • • The outputs remain modest compared to the uses of the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (the label which guarantees the origin of the wine).
  • • The fertilization is almost exclusively organic (natural composts, straw, manure).
  • • We alternate mechanical work with natural enrichment of the soil with mowed grass.

We consider that :

"It is at the vineyard that the wine is made ".

Preserve, develop what nature generously offers is our task. At each stage of production, from the culture of the vine to the elaboration of the wines we endeavour to reach the best.

Our famous soils.

The wine generated by the grapes collected on these delimited soils obeys to severe and well-defined standards.

The "KAFFERKOPF": This soil owes its reputation to its own geology. It provides the wines stemming from its hillside a characteristically delicate taste.

The "SCHLOSSBERG" : This vine is oriented full south and faces the valley of Kaysersberg. It stretches out upon a very homogneous granitic sand.

The "MAMBOURG" : This vine is located on the border hillside of the valley. It also benefits from the privileged exposition of a marly calcareous soil.
